Why whey dominated the market
Historically, whey became synonymous with "quality protein" for economic and scientific reasons: a complete protein with all essential amino acids, cheap to produce (a byproduct of cheese making), excellent absorption rate, and extensive scientific support. It's neither good nor bad — it's just the market. But the reality is that whey is not the only complete protein, and for many people, it's not even the best option.
How to measure protein quality: the industry uses two systems — PDCAAS (scale 0–1, where 1 = perfect protein) and DIAAS (a newer and more accurate version of PDCAAS, based on the real digestibility of each amino acid). Both are FAO/WHO benchmarks.

What science says about muscle gains
Here's the most important answer: the difference between a protein with a DIAAS of 1.0 and one with a DIAAS of 0.90 is negligible in practice, especially if you consume enough.
A meta-analysis published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine (Morton et al., 2018), with 49 studies and 1,863 participants, concluded that what matters for muscle gains is the total amount of protein consumed (≥1.6g/kg/day), its distribution throughout the day, and consistency — not so much the specific source.[2] The EFSA approved that "protein contributes to the maintenance and growth of muscle mass" regardless of origin. If you consume egg protein consistently and in adequate amounts, the gains will be equivalent to those from whey.
