Collagen coffee is one of the strongest functional nutrition trends in 2026. But between the promise and the reality, what does science say? Does collagen remain stable in hot coffee? Is it bioavailable?
Let's analyze the available scientific studies — no exaggerations, no empty promises — to give you a clear view of what functional collagen coffee can (and cannot) offer. Three questions, three evidence-based answers.
1. What is hydrolyzed collagen?
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body — a structural protein present in tissues such as skin, bones, tendons, and cartilage. Hydrolyzed collagen is this same protein, processed into low molecular weight peptides (3–6 kDa) through enzymatic hydrolysis. This process facilitates dissolution in liquids and maximizes absorption by the digestive system.
It is precisely this hydrolysis that makes hydrolyzed collagen different from the whole collagen in bone broth — and justifies its use in functional products like CORIAL Collagen Coffee.
2. Does collagen survive the heat of coffee?
This is the most frequent question — and science provides a clear and reassuring answer.
A randomized, double-blind clinical trial added 10g of collagen peptides to both cold water and hot coffee (60–80°C). Researchers measured Proline-Hydroxyproline and Hydroxyproline-Glycine dipeptides in the blood at different intervals after digestion.
Result: the total absorption of collagen peptides in coffee and water was statistically identical.[1] The heat of coffee does not impair the bioavailability of hydrolyzed collagen.
Additional research showed that collagen peptides remained stable and maintained their antioxidant activity after heat treatment at temperatures up to 90°C for 30 minutes.[2] Considering that coffee is typically served between 70–85°C, brief exposure to coffee heat does not significantly affect the functionality of the peptides.
Conclusion on thermal stability: Hydrolyzed collagen is thermostable at coffee temperatures. The concern "heat destroys collagen" has no scientific basis for hydrolyzed peptides — it is a confusion with unprocessed native proteins, which behave completely differently.
3. Are the peptides really absorbed?
A comprehensive review of the oral bioavailability of collagen peptides confirmed that, when ingested, peptides are absorbed in the small intestine and can enter the bloodstream as bioactive oligopeptides.[3] The hydrolysis process is precisely what maximizes this absorption — peptides of 2–6 kDa are absorbed much more efficiently than whole collagen.
4. What collagen coffee can offer — and what it cannot
82g protein/100g — qualifies as "High protein content" (EFSA approved claim). Contributes to normal muscle mass and bones.
Stable up to 90°C, with identical absorption in cold water and hot coffee.[1,2]
Preliminary studies exist but the claims are not approved by EFSA for generic collagen. CORIAL does not use this language.
Health claims for generic collagen — improving skin, hair, nails or joints — are not approved by Reg. (EU) 432/2012. CORIAL only communicates approved claims: hydrolyzed collagen as a structural protein contributes to the maintenance of muscle mass and normal bones. Any product advertising "anti-aging" or "improves skin" is violating European regulations.
